Description
The four tocopherols (α, β, δ, and γ) and four tocotrienols (α, β, δ, and γ) are forms of vitamin E, which is known for its antioxidant activity.1 Tocotrienols are found in high concentrations in palm oil and rice bran. Recent studies observe that tocotrienols may be more effective antioxidants than α-tocopherol, the most abundant form of vitamin E.2 Spontaneously hypertensive rats fed a diet which includes γ-tocotrienol show significant reduction of systolic blood pressure and an increase of nitric oxide synthase activity in blood vessels.3 γ-Tocotrienol at 20 µM induces apoptosis of malignant sympathoadrenal (+SA) murine mammary epithelial cells.4
